Our STORY
In 2024, two passionate and skilled professionals from different areas of the construction industry came together with a shared vision: to build not just structures, but lasting relationships with clients, employees, and communities. The Big Timber Construction co-founders, Mike and Max, had worked for established construction firms for years, witnessing firsthand the challenges and limitations within the industry, particularly the lack of personalized service, transparency, and quality.
Max Willard, one of the founding members, brought a distinguished and highly specialized background in marine construction to the company. With extensive experience on high-profile coastal development projects—including piers, docks, and waterfront infrastructure—he offered critical insight into the unique challenges of building in marine environments. His deep expertise in navigating tidal zones, addressing environmental regulations, and working with specialized construction materials significantly expanded the firm's capabilities. This proficiency, combined with the team’s diverse skill set, established a strong foundation for Big Timber Construction to confidently undertake complex, water-related projects.
Big Timber Construction was established when Max and Mike identified a growing need for a construction company that focused on quality craftmanship, integrity, and delivering exceptional customer service. Both have worked with and/or managed architects, engineers, city reviewers, inspectors, and skilled tradespeople. Driven by their shared knowledge and abilities, they decided to start their own venture, aiming to redefine what clients could expect from a construction partner.
From the very beginning, Big Timber Construction set out to fill a gap in the market by offering a comprehensive approach to residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects. Today, Big Timber Construction stands as a trusted name in the industry. What began as a small start-up has blossomed into a growing company with a portfolio of successful projects. Despite their success, the company remains deeply rooted in the values it was founded on.
As a key partner in the formation of the Big Timber Construction, Mike Calder brings a seasoned and diverse background in coastal construction, developed through years of hands-on experience in the field. He began his career by founding Edgewater Construction, an electrical contracting company recognized for its precision, reliability, and commitment to quality. Mike’s work focused specifically on electrical systems for waterfront projects, giving him deep insight into the unique demands of marine environments. In addition to his electrical expertise, he gained valuable experience operating large equipment and performing specialized cement work along the shoreline. His adaptability and comprehensive understanding of coastal construction make him an integral part of the team’s capability in challenging marine settings.
